The word doula is a Greek word referring to an experienced woman who helps other women. The doula helps the birthing woman have a less complicated, more rewarding, and supportive birth. Both mother and father benefit from the doula's caring presence. She is with the mother from the beginning of labor well past the first cry of the special little newborn. It was common many years ago in America for the birthing mother to rely on an experienced woman for the much needed support during labor and birth, and it is still going on in most countries today.
I believe that birth itself as a right of passage into motherhood should be respected, appreciated and honored. Woman today are trained that birth is an illness. That it is scary, intolerably painful, and unnatural. We are made to feel inadequate and ignorant about our own bodies. Women often leave hospitals after giving birth without the pride, confidence, and elation becoming a new mom should bring. I believe childbirth should give the woman the dignity, and self confidence that is essential in motherhood.
I am so excited to serve women and to help them achieve their birthing goals. I love to empower women and encourage them to have the birth that is right for them. Once you have obtained my service I will meet with you twice before labor begins. We will discuss your birth plan (or I can help you make one), and your goals as they pertain to birthing. I would like to accompany you to a prenatal visit with your practitioner whether they are doctor or midwife, as well as the hospital tour. I will then see you again on that special day, and at least once after.
